Steps To Repair Outlook Data Files Using The Repair Tool

Sometimes, you may find it difficult to open your Personal folders or your Offline folder file. This may happen because the .pst file or .ost file may be corrupted. Instead of seeking technical assistance, you can also repair the .pst and .ost files by using the Inbox Repair tool. This helps in diagnosing the errors in the file, and can be considered as one of the best solutions to repair it. However, the point to be noted is that the Inbox Repair Tool scans only the .pst and .ust files, and does not scan your mailbox, which runs on the server running Microsoft Exchange.
One of the main advantages of the Inbox Repair tool is that it works on both the data files Microsoft Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folders File, and the Office Outlook Personal Folders File, as well as in Microsoft Outlook 2003 and Microsoft Outlook 2007.
You can follow these steps to repair the corrupted .pst and .ost files:
  • Make sure you close the Outlook application if it is running.
  • Now, double click on the Scanpst.exe that is located at driver:\Program files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE 12.
  • Enter the name of the .pst or .ost file that you want to check in the Enter the name of the file you want to scan box option. You can also click Browse to search for the file. The Outlook repair team can be contacted to get more information.
  • Click on Options.
  • Select Start. If errors are found, you will get a message asking what action you wish to take.
  • Here, a backup file would be created during the repair process. If you wish to change the default name or location of this backup file, enter the name in the Enter name of backup file box option.
  • Now, click Repair and start Outlook by using the profile that contains the .pst file that you had tried to repair. The Outlook repair would also provide you necessary information on this.
  • Select Folder list on the Go menu.
  • Here, you may see a folder named as Recovered Personal Folders which contains all your default Outlook folders or a Lost and Found Folder. Since, the recovered folder is a rebuilt .pst file it is usually empty. However, those items missing from the Lost and Found Folder cannot be repaired.
  • Once you see a Recovered Personal Folders folder, create a new .pst file and move all the items from the Lost and Found Folder into the new .pst file. Once you have finished it, remove the Recovered Personal Folders file from your profile.
Now, you might be able to open your Personal folders successfully. However, if the problem persists, the best solution would be contact the Microsoft tech support.
